Review:
Sorry this is a little late, but I just watched this movie yesterday even though it came out in like October but whatever, the review is finally here. I've heard pretty good things about this movie, it got 84% on Rotten Tomatoes when I saw the summary for the movie, but I JUST CHECKED and it only has 66%! Lies!!!!!! It even won best actress for Carey Mulligan in the British Independent Film Awards, and had 5 nominations in total!!! So I had pretty high expectations when I watched it, plus it was an indie movie which is always a plus.
So I had no idea what the movie was about and I saw the "summary" of the movie and it literally said, adventures of 2 girls at boarding school...okay...so basically it had nothing to do with the movie because there are actually 3 main characters and it totally ignores the science fiction aspect of the movie. Okay so the REAL summary of the movie (without really trying to spoil it) is: 3 children, Mulligan, Knightley, and Garfield, are at a strangely mysterious boarding school where the children are sheltered and different. Basically, these children are made purely to be harvested for their organs. Sounds super familiar yes? If you have seen The Island (with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johanssen) the plot is similar, actually it is quite similar to many other scifi plots that I've seen. Okay, so therefore the children have obviously no idea what they're doing is ethically wrong and believe that having their organs harvested is completely normal. But of course, our main character, Carey Mulligan is curious about this lifestyle. Blah blah blah. Predictable, ethical, whatever.
This movie leaves a lot of unexplained answers when you're first watching it, and it needs to be watched at least twice in order for you to really pay attention to the details since the first time around, you're really trying to figure out the plot, but it's not obviously until the very end. The whole time I was watching the movie I was like..what I don't get it, wait, that doesn't make sense, wait, what are they talking about??? I was confused to say the least. There are a lot unexplained scenes that I am still confused about. And then when I found out what they were REALLY TALKING ABOUT as in the point of the plot, I was like this is lame...Sorry to those of you who are offended!
Okay, well, this movie does have some saving grace, I mean it's predictable plot makes it annoying, but its cinematically shot quite nicely and the soundtrack is well matched to the tone of the movie. The acting is also quite good, along with the casting! The children version of Keira and Carey are scarily similar to their counterparts! I was like WHOA this is literally like a mini-me of them!
Grade: B-
Predictable plot mixed with unexplained scenes make this film boring and questionable. But the acting and casting are really amazing. Must watch again to regrade it I think. But first time around, I was annoyed and bored with the slow progression of the movie.
