Skins: Tea (S1E2)

So last week Skins was a little lackluster so hopefully MTV learned a few things from the vicious things that the fans raged about, aka make it more raunchy, BUT the freaking Parents Television Council went APESHIT over the first episode so MTV might have to censor it and make it even less raunchy. UGH. Catch-22 much?

But you know what, PTC being little biatches only makes the show seem better and gets it free publicity...

Okay so each show, I'm assuming focuses on one character, hence the title of this episode, Tea, and Tony from the last episode. Tea is a closeted lesbian to her parents and most of her friends and head of the cheer squad. Nice. First 3 minutes we already have a sex scene. This episode is already nicely pre-empted so let's see how the rest of it goes.

  • TEA
    • Dysfunctional family. Check.
      • Crazy busy and she's just in the family being neglected by everyone around her. And the only person in her family she can talk to is her dementia riddened Grandma and even she falls asleep on her. Poor Tea. At least she found someone to relate to, someone else who knows exactly what she's going through.
    • Daddy's girl. So she's dating a guy to help out her Dad with his business mob/mafia thingy. It's really sweet because her Dad tries so hard to keep the family together. :)
      • Her date: Tony. Haha. They're really cute together, as friends and all. :)
        • Their dance scene: SO WEIRD.  But they hooked up! What?!! Crazy business. Anyways, I really like Tony. :)
    • Tea's lesbian tryst with Betty. Kind of upset that she got rejected she puts up a front like she doesn't care but she ends up being stressed over the fact that she was being called a scaredy cat.  I guess she's not as tough as she thinks she is.
      • She gets the girls. She gets the sex. But she never gets the relationship, the love that she really craves. A girl that's her equal. It's really sad actually.
        • But it all worked out in the end with Betty. And Tony? Who's she going to choose, if she's going to choose anybody?
    • Crazy drug dealer man stalking Tea. But her Dad is so freaking legit dealing with the drug dealer and all. <3

I have to admit, this episode was toned down a bit, I think I'm going to start appreciating it as it's own entity rather than a spin-off of another popular television show because then I won't have to keep making comparisons with something I've never even seen before. I really like the characters Tea and Tony because they're so mysterious and unpredictable and I think they're both really good actors/actresses. Sounds terrible but is it sad that I want to see more of this show? Is that sad? :(

So I absolutely abhor posting screen shots because it requires me doing a lot of work even though it makes posts all look significantly better, anyways so for Skins, since it has THE BEST MUSIC, really probably the only good thing out of the show so I'm going to post some music that was featured on the show instead, my personal favorite from the episode:

Sherlocks Daughter -- Kids (Alison Wonderland Remix)
"I matched you. I matched you good."

The Cape: Scales (S1E4)

Oh my gosh, sorry for the spam earlier with episodes 2 and 3.  Blogger was doing something really funny so I was trying something out (deleting reposting etc) and I just remembered it would totally suck for anyone trying to read this on an RSS feed or something.

Well, let's get this up to date, shall we?

Scales
Episode 4 is in essence about the man named in the title: Scales.  He is being contracted by Chess for armaments and taxed legally by Fleming.  Vince, as the Cape, goes and informs him of this, pointing out an obvious fact: he was still getting order even after "Chess" was supposed to be dead.  So, in essence, Scales was paying the same man twice.

Now why go through all this trouble, especially if Scales is particularly unhappy with the Cape already from an earlier escapade (in episode 1 where he goes to save Max from him).  Vince's ingenious plan boils down to this: to get Scales to out Fleming as Chess, and thus clearing his own name.  He gives Scales the plan to corner Fleming aboard a train full of every "rich player in the city," called the Monte Carlo train.

The Carnival of Crime, getting ready to do some business.
Fleming points a gun at the Cape.
Unfortunately for Scales (and Vince), the Carnival of Crime has also decided to attend the party.  While Scales pushes his way onto the train with his inside information over Fleming's head, Vince and Orwell have to try and prevent a robbery by the people who took Vince in.  They are aided by Portman, who has dressed as the Cape (the party is a masquerade of heroes and villains).  Through a series of unfortunate events, Scales, who does indeed out Fleming but is laughed at instead of believed, decides to rob everyone instead.  He fleeces them and leaves them to die (their brakes are sabotaged courtesy of a malfunction when the trains are separated), and he is in turn fleeced by Max and the others.  And as unlikely as it is, the Cape must team up with Fleming to save the day.  When all is over and done with, Fleming smiles and tells Vince that he's glad he has such a good opponent this time around.

Vince has a confrontation with Max later where he throws down the circumstances: one day, in the future, they will be on different sides.  Max just replies glibly that they should just enjoy the time until that day.

Trip on his birthday the year before.
There is a side story to all this: It's Trip's birthday.  That fact has Vince acting edgy all night.  Trip is not doing too well at school because all his classmates think he's Chess's son (his book gets marked up "Return to Murderers son") and his mother is stuck in traffic so she'll be late to celebrate his birthday.  She sends Travis Hall ahead first, who is there to go over some depositions with her as well as celebrate Trip's birthday, but Trip refuses to open the door because his father had once warned against opening the door for any strangers.  Travis spends most of the episode camped outside the apartment, talking to Trip while sitting and waiting on Dana.  He tells Trip some good news: technically, and legally, Vince is actually considered innocent until proven guilty.  He is rewarded with a fruit snack, but still isn't given entrance into the apartment.  (Laughs)

Orwell breaks down the evening, telling Vince why it wasn't a failure.
There's a sad, poignant moment when Vince and Orwell break down the night, and Orwell notes that after all that's happened, Vince is still wrapping a birthday present for his son.  She asks:

Orwell: "Why do parents love their kids like that?"
Vince: "They just do."
Orwell: "Do you think that anything could ever make that love go away?"
Vince: "No."

Points to another piece of evidence suggesting Fleming is her father.

The last part is a delivery for Trip, a birthday present from the Cape.  Such a sweet end.

My thoughts

I have to say, I was rather excited when I found out Vinnie Jones (Scales) was going to be in a TV show.  I've always kinda liked his gruff guy act.  I'm glad for him that he has a bigger part than just that bit role in the first episode.

About Orwell, I think that when the rest of her story gets revealed, I'm probably going to be a little misty-eyed.  I bet she wishes Vince was her father instead of Fleming (unconfirmed of course).  I'm a little worried the creators are going to start a relationship with Vince and her, but it's probably unfounded.  It would ruin his image as the family man.

And Trip?  He's just so cute, I feel so bad for him being bullied by his classmates.  I hope Fleming doesn't find him and make his life even more of a hell than it already is.  He's had enough.

The Cape: Kozmo (S1E3)

I realized my last post was a bit long, so I decided to sum up rather than recap it by each scene.  Seems to work better.  Anyway...

This episode focuses a little more on the cape itself.  Vince is still trying to battle Fleming in his own way, but he gets into a little trouble when a man comes and claims the cape he's using is actually his.

Gregor Molotov at a Russian prison
As was told by Max in the first episode, the cape used to belong to Kozmo, a magician who was called unkillable.  We find out through a Russian prison escapee, Gregor Molotov, that "Kozmo" is actually a name given to a long line of magicians, the latest of which was Max Malini himself.  Gregor was supposed to be next in line, and so he becomes pissed off when he finds out that Max has passed him over and has given the cape to Vince.  Further explanations by Max enlighten Vince to the fact that Max was sick of the black deeds done by all those that held the name "Kozmo," so he had the cape stolen back from Gregor and ended the line.  By giving it to Vince, he was hoping that it would have more beneficial instead of malicious intents.  He advises Vince to keep the cape hidden until Gregor leaves.

Gregor, the ruthless man that he is, won't stop until he gets his cape back and he's not above killing his old mentor, Max, as well as anyone else who stands in his way.

Dana at work with a lot of paperwork
Meanwhile, Dana's putting her new job to good use: she starts digging into Vince's case.  She discovers that there are many men at the freight yard who saw Vince drugged and dragged into the boxcar.  Unfortunately, she still trusts Marty and tells him of her discoveries.  He in turn routs out everyone from the freight yard, because he knows that some of them must've seen his face as well.

However, Marty's integrity is in jeopardy anyway, as Orwell finds time to blog about her suspicions that he is working under the thumb of Chess.

Luckily for Dana (and unluckily for Marty), she is anonymously given pictures of the routing at the freight yards, confirming her suspicions of a coverup.  The note that came with it told her to never lose hope.

On a personal note, Dana's boss Travis Hall has started showing interest in her, much to the chagrin of Vince who can only watch from the shadows.

Fleming at his desk at ARK headquarters
Then we delve a little deeper into Fleming.  We find out that Fleming is looking for his missing daughter and that he is royally pissed when he discovers that Orwell is onto Marty and tells him to designate a substantial section of his task force to finding Orwell and taking 'him' down.

Vince confronts Orwell about her secretive past.
Orwell goes to the Carnival (at Rollo's invitation) to find out a little more about Vince's other partners.
All is not good on the home front either.  Orwell gets mad at Vince for his risky behavior that caused her own anonymity to be in danger.  He in turn yells at Orwell, asking her why she never says anything about herself, not even her real name.

Orwell, hiding out in Vince's hideout, gets an invitation to the Carnival by Rollo.  Curious, she goes along.  She meets Max and his crew, as well as Gregor, who reads her palm and proclaims that she is not who she says she is (Julia, at the moment) and that she has been imprisoned before.  She confirms these allegations later as she is making up with Vince.

They reconcile fully after he saves her from the clutches of Gregor.

Trip Faraday on a rooftop talking to the Cape.
Another touching moment with Trip and the Cape, where they say the Cape's motto: "One man, one fight, one right."  Vince tells Trip to stop fighting in school because his father got his medals for valor, not for fighting.  Another example of how Vince is trying to be a good father to Trip, even in his roundabout I'm-supposed-to-be-dead sort of way.

Inside Fleming's music box.

After a glimpse inside the box of Fleming's and images of Orwell dancing, we are left with one last burning question: Is Orwell Fleming's daughter?

My thoughts

I had my suspicions on Orwell, considering the grudge she had against Fleming, but this just got even juicier.  What could she have been imprisoned for?  What could daddy dearest -- if it really is Fleming -- have done to deserve such hatred?

I know Gregor's supposed to be one bad dude, but you must admit he does have a flair for the dramatic when it comes to killing people.  It's sad to say, but the scenes of his violent crimes are my favorite picks for this episode, seconded very closely by Rollo hitting on Orwell in Vince's hideout.

The Cape: Tarot (S1E2)

Haha sorry this is late.  Heyitsabell's been on me to catch up but I guess I've been lazy.  On that note, however, I need to warn you: If you have not watched the first episode, don't read on.  There might not be too many spoilers, but there's one major one.

Yeah, okay, for those of you who are still with me, here we go:

Vince Faraday has donned the superhero persona known as the Cape.  By now, we (the audience) know that Peter Fleming is Chess, but for Vince to gain some credibility in exposing Fleming, he needs to build up his reputation.  In order to do that, and prove to his son that the Cape is a good superhero, he's been going around fighting small-scale crime.  The first scene is of a holdup in a drug store where Vince is shopping.  He saves the store (destroying quite a bit of merchandise though) and the owner gives his earnest gratitude.  When he asks for Vince's name, he says "the Cape."  It seems to be a running gag that everyone seems to think that's a really lame name for a superhero, so the owner calls out as Vince is leaving, "You'll work on it."

Now on to the real plot.  Patrick Portman, Secretary of the Bureau of Prisons, is the only man who thus far has stood up to Fleming publicly (Orwell doesn't count as she's not exactly a public figure).  He is the only one that has not approved the bill for privatizing the police force -- and handing over full reins to Fleming and Ark Corporation.

Patrick Portman, Secretary of the Bureau of Prisons

Naturally as in all superhero shows, Fleming hires a dangerous hitman to take out the opposition: Cain, a mercenary trained under the deadly art of poisons.  Vince meets Cain firsthand when he breaks into Fleming's home to figure out his next plans.  After discovering the assassination plot on Portman, he is confronted by Fleming and is stabbed by a flying dagger dipped in poison.  He falls out the window to be picked up by Orwell in a NICE car (2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG).  Cain gets down the stairs in time to break in the window and show Orwell the image of a Tarot card tattooed on his forearm.  He can't be taken to the hospital as he's supposedly dead, so he goes to get help from Max.

Cain, Fleming's new assassin
After Vince's near death experience, Max takes the cape back, saying that he was wrong and Vince is not ready for it.  He even offers him an escape: untraceable train tickets for him and his family to start over somewhere new.  Vince, unable to accept failure and running away, refuses vehemently.  He leaves, determined to carry out his mission, with or without the help of the cape.  Vince finds a new secret hideout location and starts finding useful equipment.

Meanwhile, Fleming and his very cool computer combines components such as Portman, Cain, a Tarot card entitled "the Tower" (last seen tattooed on Cain's forearm), and a few other files into a master file which he names "Siren."  No news yet on if this means anything.

Back on the home front, Dana has been searching for a job under her maiden name, since Faraday is causing too many eyebrows to be raised.  Trip finds out when he answers a phone call and gets angry.  He believes that if she truly believed Vince was innocent, she would have nothing to fear from using her real name, and that she is trying to erase him by saying anything differently.  Faradays are fighters, is what Vince always said.  She goes to bed chastened by her son and thinks about it.

Vince practicing to avoid knives in his new hideout.
(Sorry for the poor lighting, but his place is kinda always like that.)
Orwell holding up a tarot card and explaining the significance.
Back to Vince: he's been trying to practice to defeat Cain, knowing he's been foolish to underestimate his opponents.  He dodges knives and takes poisons in small doses to build up immunity.  He also makes his mask for the first time.  After he shakes down a couple thugs for some information (which he's promised at a later time), Orwell shows up and informs Vince that he's not seeing the bigger picture: Cain might be the first evidence there is of Tarot, "a secret society of killers," of which Cain is most likely their poisoner.  After Vince's lead gets poisoned (along with the rest of the bar), he goes to find Portman and tell him directly about the hit placed on him and tells him he's not alone in his fight against Fleming.

On a happier note, Dana decides to stand up for herself and her pride as a Faraday in her next job interview at the district attorney's office.  "Faradays are fighters" she informs her interviewer seriously while telling him off about not giving her the job.  She argues that her husband, though everyone believes him to be guilty, was never given a trial and she wants to provide justice for those who are denied it like him.  You go, Dana Faraday.  (Minor spoiler: He hires her. Yay.)

Some reconnaissance work by Orwell and Vince (with a handy password of Marty's into the ARK mainframe) is done on Cain, and before Vince sets out on his protection detail of Portman, he gets a surprise visit from an old friend.  Max comes by and gives the cape back.  It seems the tickets were a test, to see how far Vince was willing to go.  Vince says his family is his strength and not his weakness, and they won't be in danger as long as Vince Faraday is dead.  Max tells Vince very seriously that if he ever wants to get his family back and go back home, he has to do it as Vince Faraday and not the Cape.

The Cape and Orwell foil the assassination attempt and Portman votes down the bill.  All is well in Palm City, at least for the moment.  Even Chess is happy: he finally has an opponent who is worthy of his time.  It ends with Dana apologizing to Trip for not believing, and telling him that their memories of Vince can never be spoiled by others.

Dana and Trip Faraday
My thoughts

All in all, a solid episode.  I'm glad they kept up the intensity and action, even with revealing the identity of the villain in the first episode.   All the interludes of Dana and Trip Faraday kinda bring it home, knowing that Vince's family really is worth fighting for.

I've seen commercials for "The Cape" and they say that they're taking suggestions as to the next villains for the show.  It's probably a fun idea, but I hope it pans out in the end.  Too many ideas can cause a project to seem a little too haphazard and not cohesive.  I'm sure they'll make it work though.

My favorite part of this episode is when Vince is practically dying at Max's, Rollo is asking him where he met the hot Orwell.  "Was it an online thing?"  He cracks me up.

Glee: A Very Glee Christmas (S2E10)

Okay, hello everyone. Let me apologize for kind of bashing Glee during The Golden Globes Awards. I am just sick of Glee hogging all the spotlight from other shows. I don't know if they deserve the awards more but for me, Glee is getting a little overrated. Particularly last year's lackluster season. But, I still love Glee, I love the songs, I love the drama, and I still love watching the show and that's the truth. So forgive me if you were offended, I'm just here to express my opinions. Please feel free to disagree. Thanks. :)

Yes, I realize it's almost February and I'm reviewing a Christmas episode. Sorry for being so late! But excited for it to come back in February (2/8)! Apparently Charice, aka Sunny Corazon, is going to come back! Yes, loved herrrr Telephone rendition in the restroom with Rachel.

Anyways back to this episode, Christmas songs, my favorite part of Christmas :)))) But seriously, I hope that the storyline actually continues...like The Rocky Horror Glee Show (one of my favorites) was really good but had nothing really to do with the story line of Glee, it was kind of just like a SPECIAL EPISODE in which the Glee cast starred in it. Okay, a little bit of triangle with Carl-Emma-Mr. Schu but that was it. And Mr. Schu and Emma didn't even address it later on...

So quick recap from last episodes:

  • Emma married the dentist Carl (John Stamos) in Vegas
  • Artie and Brittanny <333333
  • Rachel cheated on Finn with Puck after she found out about the Santana thing...
New episode:
  • Artie and Brittany are so adorableeeeee. I love the Santa letter thing, that was so adorable. :) Why is Brittany so cuteeee :)
  • The random songs were strange. Like the decorating of the tree, most of the time like they kind of intro it but this time it was super random. Also I thought that some of the characters don't celebrate Christmas?? Shouldn't they be more like [insert word of your choice here] for all the people who don't celebrate Christmas????
  • Whatever, their Christmas tree is freaking hilarious. It's like the most shit-astic combination of tree from the side of the road, secondhand ornaments and stolen empty Christmas boxes from the mall. Only Glee would throw a pity party like that.
  • Brittany believing in Santa. Her wish is really cool and she's super sweet, and wouldn't it be bomb if Artie did walk like for reals??? When he did that dance number in the mall I was so surprised and it was ridiculously amazing!!!!! But I love how the Glee-ers are helping out with the belief in Santa so that she won't get disappointed. I especially loved Coach Beast's part. So adorable:) And of course, Artie is "walking" Nice. Coach Beast is sooooo  sweet! :))))))
  • Sue as the Grinch. Surprise surprise...but she was nice to Brittany. I like, I like. :)
  • Rachel getting rejected...kind of sad but she kind of deserves it not going to lie... But I loved her dress when she was singing The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas Darling"!!!!!!! I also really loved the cardigan/scarf ensemble everyone wore. :)
  • Favorite song: "Baby It's Cold Outside" with Kurt and Blaine! A little short, but nice! Even though I'm biased towards "Last Christmas" --> Honestly best song ever!!!
  • Giving presents to homeless children is pretty smart for a family and singing show and not really having to incorporate a too dense storyline in this episode. It has a good overtone and blah blah blah. Christmas-y and wonder morals. Overall, the singing was pretty good...but the episode was pretty cheesy and lame. And I'm not going to sugar coat it and say it was amazing. Because honestly it wasn't. Gleeks, don't be mad, sometimes you have to admit to yourself that you can't just like Glee because you like the show, you really need to reflect on the episode. I'm excited to see the next episode because I am 99% sure it'll be better. :)
Looking forward to in the continuing season *excited!*:
  • Charice!!!!!
  • Kurt and his adventures in Dalton Academy
  • New musical guest stars! Gwenyth Paltrow and Britney Spears were so amazing last year!!!!
  • New Glee power couple is up for grabs as well! Brittany and Artie, Quinn and Sam, or maybe someone else???
  • More drama, hopefully something more interesting than love triangles...
  • Also heard I heard...Gwenyth Paltrow is supposed to be Mr. Schu's love interest...
  • And Lauren??? Is she going to be a mainstay? She's seriously a Debbie Downer...
And something to look forward to in general:
  • Soon enough, won't be out until later this year but...NBC is also producing a musical drama about people coming together to put on a Broadway musical. Finally, some competition for Glee. I'm excited...hopefully it'll be good, I like when shows compete against each other. I like when anything battles against each other, case in point: Apple's iPhone vs. Google's Android phones. But that's a different story. I say...bring it on NBC! :)
Okay, see you guys when Glee comes back next! As of now...watching Shameless, The Cape, and Bob's Burgers and couldn't be happier, I always love new shows. Oh yes, and of course, my favorite Archer is coming back! H. Jon Benjamin in 2 shows. Yes! :)

[On a quick side note: The Cape is actually pretty good. Yes it sounds lame, "I watch The Cape" Bahaha but it's a pretty good show,  you should check it out, it's a pretty good shift in your average spring line-up. Besides if you don't really like it, stop watching it. Oh yes, and serennie is also reviewing it too. :)]

Shameless: Pilot (S1E1)

Yet another British implant on U.S. fabricated soil. Why are we so uncreative in which we must steal shows from other countries?! This is the second show this season that is a copy. :( Boo...

Shameless (US) based off of Shameless (UK) (currently in its 8th season!) has the potential to be good~! Key word = potential. It has a pretty awesome cast: Emmy Rossum, William H. Macy, Joan Cusack, Justin Chatwin, etc etc. And it's on Showtime. You know the network who has made great shows such as Dexter, Nurse Jackie, Californication, The Big C, The Tudors, and much much more. Which means that it's basically free to do whatever it pleases. Yes!

Please don't let it be underwhelming like the US version of Skins!

Quick and dirty synopsis: Single dad. Always Drunk. Six kids.

Here are some thoughts that I pondered while watching the show:

  • Opening scene: Frank Gallagher, the dad (William H. Macy) is describing all of his kids and their best attributes while there's reels of the children almost doing the exact opposite. Ex. Ian "loves animals and brings in strays and likes to drag them up to his room"...real life: he's about to light a cat on fire with a blowtorch. Oh, irony. :)
  • Next scene: one of my favorites. I promise I'm not going to describe this scene by scene but the opening shows the head of the household, Fiona (Emmy Rossum, I love her in thisssssssss!), obviously not the drunk dad, in charge of keeping together everything, from diluting milk to waking everybody up. But what's surprising is the independence all the kids have,  well they have to be with a drunk dead beat dad like Frank. They also take on so many responsibilities like jobs, forging signatures, scraping together the electric bill and taking care of the half-Black baby by bringing him to Show-and-Tell as a means of babysitting. Mature even though they're so young. I love it.
  • Thriftiness: obviously a common theme we see here and oh how they make it work. From makeshift porn magazines to sisters and brothers sharing the same deodorant and the fact that Fiona uses the laundry machine as a vibrator. Wow... Oh, by the way, did I mention that they live in the Projects in Chicago? Nice.
  • Swearing. Absolutely needed in shows like this. Even the little kids do it. The vulgarity of using expletives just makes the show much better. It's something Skins is lacking in which makes it so annoying PG-13 even though it's not supposed to be!
  • Joan Cusack. Amazing. Love her. Can't figure her out, but that's cool anyways.
  • Exploring sexuality. There's 6 kids, mostly teens. What else do you expect? Lip trying to help out Ian, kind of, brotherly love even though it's kind of weird...
  • Steve & Fiona <3 Especially Steveeee <3 He bought her a washer so that he'd go out with her...:))))))))))))))))))) And I love what he says to herrrrr <33333333333333333 And he's got a bad side too. Yes! :)
  • And the party at the end with the neighbors, Steve, Fiona, and the Dad. Wow. Loveeeee. <333333
  • Oh yes, the family breakfast. Perfect ending:)
Sex scenes. Chase scenes. Police scenes.

Life honestly sucks for them but the that's what makes the show entertaining, it's all about acceptance. It's raw and raunchy. This show is amazing. I'll be back next week. :)

Skins: Tony (S1E1)

So we have another British implant on American television and can I just say how excited I am? I posted up a yt video of their theme song "Lina Magic" by 3D Friends and in it you can see the clever advertising that MTV used. Mostly scornful messages by haters who don't think that the US version of Skins will be as amazing as the UK one. I don't doubt that for a second, but I never watched the UK version so I'm pretty freaking excited to say the least to watch the American version.

Wait let me go back to the network that this is playing on: MTV. Music Television. Not so much as known for the music videos that it used to have on 24/7 but for being the brainchild of such shitastic shows such as Jersey Shore and the extremely awful Hard Times of RJ Berger. So if Skins is anything like that, I'm definitely not going to continue on with the next episode...WOW. MTV, Hard Times was one of the worst shows I have ever seen. In. My. Life.

So right now, Skins has two (bad) things going for it.

  1. American version of the insanely popular British Skins. Can it match up? Or is it going to be amazing, kind of like the American version of The Office? Or will it go down the drain with other British remakes like Viva Laughlin...
  2. On one of the strangest networks on television, which shows everything from teen moms and "guidos" to jackasses. Where is Skins supposed to fit in here?

So ready or not, let's get started. :) I want to see if this show can deliver all the drugs, sex, and scandals that it's set out to do.

A) The teenagers in this show are strange. It's an American show yet these teenagers aren't acting what people define as an "American teenager." They're like this svelte Euro-American mixture which gives them this air of arrogance, smugness and charm that most teenagers lack. They're like out of the awkward teen phase (for the most part) but not yet mature adults. It's extremely strange.

B) Tony, the main character in the first episode, popular, wiseass, jerk, and loaded with teenage angst character. All positive attributes but is it believable, I mean, he's wearing tight jeans, a cropped leather jacket, and gelled hair...and the fact that HE'S TOO PRETTY, not to mention his pre-puberty choir voice (but the song that he sings is pretty freaking hilarious)!!!!! Metrosexual anyone? Kind of reminds me of Christian from Clueless. Anyone feel me on this one?

C) That "Life Skills" class they have is the SHIT! I wish they had that at my school. It's like a Home Economics but filled with sexual symbolism left and right. Did you know all those peen shaped vegetables in the display? But the live rabbit. Ergh.

D) On Wikipedia it said this was filmed in Canada (like almost all the movies in Hollywood) but they don't actually deem a destination for where the show is supposed to be set.

E) They use weird slang. Is it Britsh? Because I'm not sure it's American either...I think I need to put on closed captioning or something...

F) The clothes are out of control weird. I get they're trying to be hipster and cool, but while red tutu dress and combat boots work for 6 foot tall models on the covers of Vogue, they don't work on strung out teenagers...trying to hard to be cool...something I despise!

Can I just say this first: THE MUSIC IS FREAKING AMAZING. Well, yes, this show is debuting on MTV but I'm already loving the music. No lame Top 40, but instead some nice alternative dance music (is that even a category??).

Now comes the bad news:
A) Boring. *yawn*

B) I can see why they're so many haters out there.

C) The trailers, pictures and reels all look so much more badass than the real show.

D) Lastly the plot is typical...they're trying to be out there by saying DRUGS AND SEX but...I didn't see any of it. I saw a PG-13 teen movie in 45 minutes.

But here's the truth. Yeah, I'll keep watching it (maybe reviewing it...not sure about that one) and maybe it'll get better. Well it better get better, it has a lot to live up to. I'm going to watch the British version as well, compare it side by side perhaps?

Oh Skins, I shall see you next week...

The Cape: Pilot (S1E1)

Hi there, apparently I've already been introduced. I was convinced into giving my input since I have been immersed in television as of late.
Onto the topic: NBC's new show "The Cape" sounded pretty interesting when I first saw the commercials for it. But honestly, I'm a huge fan of superheroes, so I'm not going to lie, it kinda already had an edge. I'll just give you a basic plot and such and try not to put too many spoilers in.
A man named Vince Faraday living in Palm City is a very decent cop and all around good guy. In fact, it's pretty hard to find a straighter arrow than him. He's well respected in the police force, people like him, and he's a great family man -- he even reads comic books about a superhero named the Cape with his son Trip. How quaint.
Vince and his son Trip reading the comic book
On the other side of the law, there's Chess, an inscrutable outlaw who wears a black mask and assassinates people. Only Orwell, an anonymous blogger, seems to know anything: already there's a list of dirty cops. As the lawless seem to be prevailing in the eyes of the public, Peter Fleming steps in and suggests a privatization of the police force under his company, ARK. When an attempt by Chess on the new Chief of Police's life is successful (due to misdirection of someone faking Faraday's orders), it seems inevitable and Faraday takes a job at ARK with his partner Marty Voyt.
First appearance of Chess
Fleming
Orwell leaves a message for Faraday telling of a deal Chess has set up with Scales, an arms broker of sorts, and knowing what a good guy Faraday is, Faraday goes to check it out. Long story short, Faraday is framed, escapes from his pursuers and is presumed dead -- and guilty. He is then brought unconscious to a circus full of bank robbers, headed up by Max Malini, aptly nicknamed the Carnival of Crime. He, thinking that he has brought back Chess, expects Faraday to fall in and commit some crimes together. He refuses, but gives them means to rob any bank which employs ARK to do their security-- which by this time is practically every single one.
The Carnival of Crime
Faraday understandably feels conflicted since he's a cop and he's aiding and abetting crime. With Max's help, he comes up with a plan: he will become the Cape, the hero who stepped forward when the world needed someone to, and in the process prove to his son at least that justice -- and proving his innocence -- will prevail in time.
Max gifts Faraday the cape and teaches him the ins and outs of using the cape. It is super tensile (apparently made completely of spider silk), "stronger than kevlar and thinner than filament." He learns to use it basically as a whip, picking up and throwing things. Along with that training, he also learns the methods of an escape artist. When Max finally declares him ready, he goes out on his first mission: to stop Scales's latest shipment. On this mission (which he kinda botches), he meets Orwell for the first time.
Flyers Orwell leaves at places she spies to let all her enemies know: Orwell is watching.
They agree to help each other -- Orwell will take care of the intel and the technological problems while Faraday goes down and dirty, up close and personal, and whatever other cliche you can think of. They both have the same goal: take down Chess.
Meanwhile, Chess figures out the identity of the bank robbers and kidnaps Max with an intent to kill him (he's not very cooperative). The Cape interferes, predictably, and ends up fighting Chess. Chess escapes of course (there really wouldn't be a season if he didn't).
The episode ends with the Cape paying a visit to Trip Faraday, telling him of his father's innocence and the promise that they'd be united someday, before he disappears off into the night. Very reminiscent of Batman.

My thoughts
Personally, I loved it. I'm totally into the superhero thing, have been since forever. This pilot episode totally gives you a delve into the backstory of the newest "caped crusader." Yeah, I know he's not Batman, but they gave him pretty a impressive toolbelt anyway -- well, metaphorically speaking anyway. He's got Orwell to watch over him, Max's place to hide out in, and learned to use his cape as an effective weapon. Not to mention the cool disappearing acts.

My favorite part is when Max starts teaching him to use his cape. Makes me wish I knew how to throw things with a cape, although I wouldn't want all the danger and tragedy that seems to go with it.

New Writer!

Hey all,

We have a new writer for the blog: serennie who will do some new shows that are out this season:

  • The Cape
  • Being Human
Because the rest of the potatoes are swamped with other stuff...i.e. STILL CATCHING UP! ARGH! So bear with us...still. Pretty much everything will be vintage reviews soon because it's so hard to keep up with like 10 TV shows per week. But we'll try harder, we promise! We're not going to let this blog die. :(

83rd Academy Awards 2011 Announcement

83rd Academy awards/Oscars --> I always wondered why it's the same thing. Anyways, and for some reason I forgot that the Golden Globes were the same thing...

Anyways,  more decisions to be made, more educated ones I hope since my 50% fail rate for the Golden Globes predictions.

Anyways, the nominations, according to Wikipedia will be announced:
January 25th, 2011 (so in 7 days!) at 5:38 AM (PST) and 8:38 AM (EST). So exact! So I can start watching all the movies that I completely failed to watch the first time around! :)

I'll put up nominations/predictions when it comes out! See you there~!

FRINGE: Amber 31422 (S3E5)

Back to the awesomeness that is FRINGE, Season 3. Olivia is still trapped in the alternate universe and she's carrying on her duty at Fringe Division brilliantly.

So, a bank robber Joshua whose twin brother Matthew was mistakenly trapped in amber in place of him succeeds in releasing said twin brother from amber quarantine but since the rest of the world doesn't know that the people trapped in amber are in suspended animation and can be resurrected, Fringe Division has the job of catching the escapee, Matthew, and burying the truth once again.

While trying to figure out the puzzle of the case, once again Peter's illusion haunts Olivia and gives her clues as how to crack the case. Olivia suspects that the twin brothers switch themselves but the crew can't act on hunch and by Olivia's mum's advise, Olivia is dismissed from the case, infuriating her. Alternate Walter's experiment for Olivia, however, proves to be fruitful this time around. She manages to cross over to our side of the world for a minute but it was enough to give Olivia ideas that maybe she isn't from the alternate world otherwise she wouldn't have known all those things about the other world, isn't it? Confusing, confusing, I KNOW, which is exactly why you have to watch this amazing series yourself.

Anyway, Joshua figures out that even if he turns himself in, the authorities would find out that the one trapped in amber four years ago is Matthew and not Joshua, so Matthew would be experimented on afterwards for the rest of his life and that is one chance Joshua isn't willing to take. Therefore, he stages another bank robbery at a remote location in hope of getting trapped during the quarantine alarm and all will be as before, except this time it's the real Joshua that is trap. It's sort of an atonement for 'stealing' his brother's life for four years. Olivia knows this and goes to visit Matthew at his house but tells him that she isn't going to pursue the matter.

Peter's illusion tells her, in her mind, that she lets Matthew go because she's experiencing the exact same thing as him, trapped in a world she doesn't belong to and no one is going to save her. In her panic, she rushes back to the lab and asks to be transported over to the other side to confirm her suspicions. They do this by putting her in a water tank, then suppressing her senses with a cocktail of drugs which sens her body into shock and voila, transports her to our/her world back.

When she returns from the short experience, alternate Walter asks what happened to her this time but she said nothing. Judging by alternate Walter's expression, he does not buy Olivia's lie. I'm afraid Olivia's days in the alternate side is numbered now and seriously, Peter needs to come to the rescue already.

Olivia has managed to get on so well with her team in the alternate side, it's sad to know that it's not gonna last and she will have to escape from there somehow sometime.

House: Small Sacrifices (S7E8)

Hullo! Brand new year and one old episode of House from last year. I'm taking over House reviews from my fellow CP heyitsabell because she's busy watching Taiwanese drama Endless Love and since we both watch House, we can help each other out whenever.

So, this episode opens with a man who got hospitalised after blood poisoning from crucifying himself. Crazy shit, right??? But hey, I know there are weird people all over the world. The man's daughter was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer so he made a bargain with God that for each year of his daughter's subsequent life, he would do a symbolic sacrifice to Him by crucifying himself and bam, his daughter's cancer disappeared three weeks after that. He refuses medical treatment because he fears it would violate his pact and his daughter would die. ugh. Tough talking anything through such people.

Meanwhile, Cuddy is still mad at House for lying to her on his last case. She would accept nothing besides an apology but House feels he had done nothing wrong. After all, lying saved that patient's life. Cuddy is having none of that 'everyone lies' argument. Wilson suggests to House that he pretends to lie and also spills to House that he is about to propose to Sam again even though he has suspicions that Sam falsifies her hospital reports. Uh-oh. Trouble trouble. Taub suspects that his wife is taking revenge on him by having an affair with a man from her support group. Chase is...enjoying bachelor life - having all the sex (threesomes, etc) without any of the guilt and Foreman...meh, Foreman is just Foreman. Not much character development on Foreman this time around. Now, Martha, Martha, Martha. I hate Martha.  I hate Martha and her sense of moral and honesty. I hate the character and I dislike the actress playing her. Every time she gets screen time, i groan at my computer.

This episode doesn't seem to focus too much on the patient case. More of House's staff drama at play here this time and it might as well be that way, because I'm not too keen on watching some religious fanatic on my fave tv show.

The patient refuses medical treatment, starts losing his teeth and have some kind of expression disorder as a result of his sickness. His daughter even comes around to convince him to take medicine but he wouldn't listen to her. So what's a doctor got to do? Lie, of course. House tells him that God already broke his pact because his daughter's cancer still exists and the man calls him a bastard but let House do everything to him aka give meds etc. So yay, he recovers, House tells him the truth that his daughter is fine and dandy and the man becomes more obsessed with God than he already was.

In order to make up with Cuddy, House lies that he's remorseful for having lied to her but that makes Cuddy happy so everything's alright for the moment. I say 'for the moment' because House's face tells me that he can't live this way for too long -- pleasing someone at the expense of his own sense of justice. Wilson proposes to Sam and she's all excited until Wilson blurted out about the reports and then it's NO DEAL. NO re-MARRIAGE, NO RELATIONSHIP. Such is the reward for being honest. I weep for Wilson here. sobs* What a poor thing. This episode ends with everyone having new relationship problems. HELP!!!!! I hope things get better in episode 9.

Well, there's always next year~! Next year I'll try to watch all the movies before they come out. Haha. Surprisingly Inception didn't win anything, strange or not? It was such a hit in the summer!

See all the amazing (and some lackluster) outfits here~! Argh but seriously I despise when stars who aren't nominated for anything wear like the hugest most eye-catching dress ever. Sorry, you're not nominated, cry me a river, and let the nominees have their night!!! Don't wear a super big prom dress with a 5 foot train if you're not nominated (cough cough Eva Longoria & Jennifer Love Hewitts' mock wedding dress?! & all you other wannabes~!!!). But does anyone else think that Annette Bening looked ridiculous??? Helena Bonham Carter I get because she always pulls this kind of shit on us (did you see her mismatched shoes???), but AB, did you really have to look like that?! This is kind of your night to shine and you're basically saying a EFF YOU to everyone who voted for you. Argh oh well...And all you men out there who tried to do something besides the traditional black tux, good for you~! :)
