Shameless: Pilot (S1E1)

Yet another British implant on U.S. fabricated soil. Why are we so uncreative in which we must steal shows from other countries?! This is the second show this season that is a copy. :( Boo...

Shameless (US) based off of Shameless (UK) (currently in its 8th season!) has the potential to be good~! Key word = potential. It has a pretty awesome cast: Emmy Rossum, William H. Macy, Joan Cusack, Justin Chatwin, etc etc. And it's on Showtime. You know the network who has made great shows such as Dexter, Nurse Jackie, Californication, The Big C, The Tudors, and much much more. Which means that it's basically free to do whatever it pleases. Yes!

Please don't let it be underwhelming like the US version of Skins!

Quick and dirty synopsis: Single dad. Always Drunk. Six kids.

Here are some thoughts that I pondered while watching the show:

  • Opening scene: Frank Gallagher, the dad (William H. Macy) is describing all of his kids and their best attributes while there's reels of the children almost doing the exact opposite. Ex. Ian "loves animals and brings in strays and likes to drag them up to his room"...real life: he's about to light a cat on fire with a blowtorch. Oh, irony. :)
  • Next scene: one of my favorites. I promise I'm not going to describe this scene by scene but the opening shows the head of the household, Fiona (Emmy Rossum, I love her in thisssssssss!), obviously not the drunk dad, in charge of keeping together everything, from diluting milk to waking everybody up. But what's surprising is the independence all the kids have,  well they have to be with a drunk dead beat dad like Frank. They also take on so many responsibilities like jobs, forging signatures, scraping together the electric bill and taking care of the half-Black baby by bringing him to Show-and-Tell as a means of babysitting. Mature even though they're so young. I love it.
  • Thriftiness: obviously a common theme we see here and oh how they make it work. From makeshift porn magazines to sisters and brothers sharing the same deodorant and the fact that Fiona uses the laundry machine as a vibrator. Wow... Oh, by the way, did I mention that they live in the Projects in Chicago? Nice.
  • Swearing. Absolutely needed in shows like this. Even the little kids do it. The vulgarity of using expletives just makes the show much better. It's something Skins is lacking in which makes it so annoying PG-13 even though it's not supposed to be!
  • Joan Cusack. Amazing. Love her. Can't figure her out, but that's cool anyways.
  • Exploring sexuality. There's 6 kids, mostly teens. What else do you expect? Lip trying to help out Ian, kind of, brotherly love even though it's kind of weird...
  • Steve & Fiona <3 Especially Steveeee <3 He bought her a washer so that he'd go out with her...:))))))))))))))))))) And I love what he says to herrrrr <33333333333333333 And he's got a bad side too. Yes! :)
  • And the party at the end with the neighbors, Steve, Fiona, and the Dad. Wow. Loveeeee. <333333
  • Oh yes, the family breakfast. Perfect ending:)
Sex scenes. Chase scenes. Police scenes.

Life honestly sucks for them but the that's what makes the show entertaining, it's all about acceptance. It's raw and raunchy. This show is amazing. I'll be back next week. :)
